Ephesians 6:11
(page 1 of 4) (Put on God’s armor so that you can make a stand against the tricks of the devil.) “Ava takes her first steps toward understanding the halo's power, but a baptism by fire at the hands of the Order leaves her feeling burned” In this episode: In this life or the next is said 0 times. Ava says Fuck: 1 time, shit: 2 times, cries: 1 timeAt Cat’s Cradle.
Ava fights to open her eyes. Through the blur she sees two people and hears them talking.
Lilith: “She was dead.”
Beatrice: “Yes.”
Lilith: “So she'd go back to being dead?”
Beatrice: “There's no way of knowing.”
Ava opens her eyes, she is tied down to a bed and unable to move.
“I can't move.
Well, that was no fun while it lasted.”
~Ava
Beatrice: “The Halo chose her.”
Lilith: “It doesn't belong to her. I say we take it out.”
Beatrice: “And if she dies?”
Lilith: “That's up to God.”
The bed starts to shake and the overhead lights start to flicker. The Halo lights up and Ava’s body slowly rises up in the air. This is when she notices the restraints on her wrists. She looks terrified as she levitates there.
Beatrice: “You ever see Shannon do that?”
Lilith: “No.”
Ava (shouting): “What's happening?”
She suddenly drops and phases through the bed and her restraints, landing hard on the floor. She rolls out from under the bed and stands. The lights are still flickering. Dust is falling from the stone walls and ceiling. The halo is flaring. Lilith and Beatrice slowly approach her.
Beatrice: “I understand that you're scared, but you need to calm down.”
Ava, panting, backs up from them.
Beatrice (calmly): “It's reacting to your emotions.”
Ava: “What's reacting to my emotions?”
Beatrice: “The Halo.”
Ava (shouts): “What Halo?”
The Halo is getting brighter by the second.
Ava (getting more agitated): “What the hell is going on?”
Lilith: “This is gonna be a long day.”
The Halo pulses and sends all three into walls. Ava gets knocked out. I wonder who changed Ava's clothes. She was wearing a red shirt and black tights when they knocked her out.
Ava comes to. Father Vincent is crouched down in front of her.
Vincent: “Ava. (pauses) Are you okay? (pauses) What do you say we try this again?”
[END Scene]
Areala, the first Warrior Nun, riding into battle on horseback.
Vincent (VO): “Areala of Cordoba”
Back at Cat’s Cradle, Vincent and Ava. He is showing her the painted walls that depict the history of the Halo. Ava is wearing a armoured vest to protect the signal from the Halo being detected. She looks bored.
Vincent (continuing): “..was one of the fiercest warriors the world has ever known, but her beginnings were far more humble. She wasn't born a believer. When her family's land was seized by invaders, Areala was orphaned. She spent years wandering...lost, without purpose. Until she found Him.”
Ava stops and gives a grin.
Ava: “Liam Neeson? I've seen this one. He exacts revenge on everyone who wronged her.”
Vincent: “Not Liam Neeson.”
Ava: “The Rock?”
Vincent: “God.”
Ava: “Oh.”
Vincent: “She found God.”
Vincent opens a book he has been carrying, for Ava to read from.
Vincent: “Please. Continue.”
Ava takes the book and shakes her head.
Ava: “Yeah, I hate to disappoint, but I don't–”
Vincent points to the opposite page.
Vincent: “Here's the translation.”
Ava (reading): “"Areala spent the rest of her life fighting in His name."”
Areala, on horseback, fighting in a battle with Crusader knights.
Ava (VO): “"By 1095, when Pope Urban II ordered the First Crusade--"”
Ava: “I'm sorry. Can we maybe jump to the part where any of this has anything to do with me?”
Vincent: “You're getting there.”
Ava continues reading.
Ava: “Areala was fearless...”
More battle scenes. Areala getting a sword through her lower chest.
Ava (VO): “"...willing to give everything...-including her life. Eventually, Areala would give her life. ”
Areala laying on a cobblestone road, knights templar standing by.
Ava (VO): “But it wasn't on this day. A messenger from God, the angel Adriel had other plans.”
An angel with a Halo over his head glides down to the injured Areala. He is carrying the Cruciform sword and shield. He is elegant, handsome and very celestial. He kneels down beside Areala.
Ava (VO): “He couldn't let her die. Her journey wasn't finished. But there was only one way to save her.”
Ava: “Adriel made the greatest sacrifice. He gave up a part of himself”
The Angel Adriel takes the Halo from his head and gently places it in Areala.
[END Scene]
Ava is at a statue of an angel holding a halo. She gently touches it.
Ava: “Are you saying that thing is in me now?”
Vincent: “Obviously, that was not our plan. Fate intervened, just as it did with Areala.”
They start to walk away from the stairs that lead to the Altar and toward where Sister Warriors are training.
Ava: “Our plan?”
Vincent: “We belong to the Order of the Cruciform Sword. Devout women who've dedicated their lives to fighting an ancient evil.”
Ava (with amusement): “Devout women and you.”
Vincent: “I've been tasked with tending to their needs.”
“Well, not every need.
~Ava
Vincent: “You've seen it. The beast. It's called a Tarask. Because of the energy it takes to slip their bonds, they can only exist in our world for a short time.”
Ava: “And their world is…”
Vincent: “Hell.”
Vincent begins to walk away. Ava moves faster to catch up.
Ava: “Right. And the other ones, the ones that are here, but not here?”
Vincent: “Wraith demons. They feed on the natural darkness in people's souls, influencing them to do their bidding. They can't do any damage themselves, because they still have one foot in--”
Ava: “Hell?”
Vincent: “Right.”
Ava: “The thing on my back…”
Vincent: “Mm-hmm”
Ava: “That's why I can see them?”
Vincent: “The Halo affords you the gift of sight. The ability not just to hunt them,
but to kill them. ”
They stop walking. Ava turns to face Father Vincent.
Ava: “Okay. I hate to break it to you, but I'm no hunter. I'm not even a gatherer. A week ago, I couldn't even walk.”
Vincent: “I know, and I'm sorry for what you've been through. But perhaps God has spared you in that accident for a reason. A greater purpose.”
Ava: “No. No, no, no. You know what? Maybe I don't know who I am or what I'm supposed to do, but I'm pretty sure that fighting demons ain't it, okay?”
Ava gestures toward the training Sister Warriors.
Vincent: “Whoever bears the Halo is the new champion. The Warrior Nun.”
The door that lead to outside opens not far from them. Ava looks towards it.
Vincent: “That's the way it's been for 1,000 years. We've sworn our lives to keep this evil at bay.”
Ava: “No. No, you've sworn your lives. I just got mine back. I'm not looking for a commitment right now.”
Vincent: “This is hard to process. I get that.”
Ava keeps looking toward the open door, like she wants to bolt.
Ava: “You know what? Maybe--maybe we take the weekend.”
Vincent: “Hmmm.”
Ava: “You know? Think-- think it over. I'll come back on Monday, and we can talk more.”
Ava quickly walks out the door. Father Vincent follows.
Vincent: “Until you learn to control the Halo's powers, you're a danger to yourself and everyone around you. I can't let you leave here. ”
Ava looks toward the gate that leads to the world outside of the Monastery. Two Sisters are closing and locking the gate.
Ava: “o I'm a prisoner, then.”
Vincent: “The other option is less desirable.”
